Lasting Powers of Attorney Solicitors
Protecting your choices. Safeguarding your future.
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to choose who can make important decisions on your behalf if you are ever unable to do so yourself. It is one of the most important legal documents you can put in place — and one that is often overlooked until it is too late.
At PDA Law, our experienced private client solicitors help individuals and families put clear, robust LPAs in place, giving peace of mind that your affairs will be managed by people you trust, in the way you want.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?
A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you (the donor) to appoint one or more trusted people (your attorneys) to make decisions for you if you lose mental capacity.
There are two types of LPA in England and Wales:
Property & Financial Affairs LPA
Allows your attorney to manage bank accounts and savings, pay bills and manage income, property ownership, sales or lettings, and investments and pensions. Can be used with your consent while you still have capacity, or later if capacity is lost.
Health & Welfare LPA
Covers decisions about medical treatment and care, care home arrangements, daily living and support, and life-sustaining treatment. This LPA can only be used if you lose mental capacity.
You can make one or both types, and you can set specific instructions or preferences to guide your attorneys.
Why putting an LPA in place matters
Without a valid LPA:
- Loved ones cannot automatically act for you
- Bank accounts may be frozen
- Important decisions may be delayed
- An application to the Court of Protection may be required
Court of Protection applications are often:
An LPA avoids this by keeping control in your hands.
LPAs and Wills — why they're often done together
A Will protects what happens after you die. An LPA protects you while you are alive. For many clients, it makes sense to put both in place at the same time to ensure consistent planning, clear instructions, and fewer future disputes.
If you already have a Will, we can review it alongside your LPA to make sure the two documents work together.

Protect your choices during life and your estate after death — in a single, joined-up appointment.
Combined cost saving
Instructing us for both your LPA and Will at the same time is more cost-effective than two separate appointments. Ask us for a bundled fixed-fee quote.
One process, not two
We gather your instructions, circumstances, and wishes once — saving you time and reducing the back-and-forth of two separate engagements.
Consistent, joined-up planning
Your LPA and Will are drafted to work together — the same attorneys, executors, and wishes reflected consistently across both documents.
What the bundle covers
Timeline saving
LPA registration with the Office of the Public Guardian currently takes around 20 weeks. Starting your LPA and Will together means both are in place sooner — and you only need to go through the instruction process once.
Linked estate & care planning
Your LPA and Will sit at the heart of a wider estate and care plan. We can also advise on inheritance tax planning, trusts, and how your property is held — ensuring your wishes are protected at every stage of life.

Choosing the right attorneys
Your attorneys should be people you trust to act in your best interests, follow your wishes, and manage responsibility carefully.
Appoint more than one attorney
You can name multiple attorneys to share the responsibility, providing additional oversight and protection.
Joint or independent decisions
Decide whether your attorneys must act jointly (together) or jointly and severally (independently), depending on your circumstances.
Replacement attorneys
Appoint replacement attorneys to step in if your first choice is unable or unwilling to continue.
Set limits or safeguards
Include specific instructions or preferences to guide your attorneys and restrict certain decisions if you wish.
Our Lasting Power of Attorney service
We provide a full LPA service, including:
Clear advice on the right type of LPA for you
Drafting tailored documents (not templates)
Acting as certificate provider where appropriate
Managing registration with the Office of the Public Guardian
Secure storage and certified copies
We take time to ensure everything is done properly — because errors can invalidate an LPA or cause problems when it is needed most.
If capacity has already been lost
If a loved one no longer has mental capacity and no LPA is in place, you may need to apply to the Court of Protection to become a deputy. We can advise and assist with deputyship applications, ongoing deputy duties, and urgent or disputed matters.
